Hot Docs 2025 – Winner, Rogers Audience Award for Best Canadian Feature

Conversations between Canadian brothers living half a country apart shape the foundation of a psychedelic collage of animated vignettes. Seth lives in Toronto and has always looked up to Pete, who lives in Shamattawa, a First Nations reserve in Northern Manitoba. Together, they aim to make something that’s “funny, beautiful, spiritual, political, complex, simple and true. That should be easy, right?” Both Seth’s colourful illustrations and Pete’s gift for storytelling avoid straight lines while blending perfectly to create vivid pictures of charismatic family members. Pete’s many tales, including recollections of his teenage years in 1980s Toronto (where every house seemingly had a toilet), are interspersed with his efforts to rebuild a tipi with Seth while he visits the rez—all of this being recorded amid the interruptions of a busy household. This offbeat, handcrafted, heartfelt cinematic achievement was nine years in the making, which pales in comparison to Pete’s efforts to get a photo ID. Alexander Rogalski
