Loving Highsmith

This fascinating tribute doc delves into the life and mind of Patricia Highsmith, the famed American novelist behind psychological thrillers such as The Talented Mr. Ripley and Strangers on a Train. Drawing on her unpublished diaries and notebooks, clips from hit film adaptations of her novels, and the intimate reflections of her lovers, friends and family, the film sheds new light on Highsmith’s often-troubled quest for love and identity. A closeted lesbian, Highsmith was forced to lead a double life, hiding her vibrant love affairs from her family and the public. She waited 38 years to claim authorship of her semi-autobiographical novel The Price of Salt (adapted in the 2015 film Carol)—it was the first lesbian story with a happy ending to be published in 1950s America. Loving Highsmith is a vivid, valuable record of this enigmatic artist’s life and oeuvre.

In German, French and English with English subtitles.
