Adventures with Picasso: A Hot Docs Double Bill

Take a journey across sun-kissed southern France with the 20th Century's most iconic artist in this specially curated Picasso double bill, featuring two rarely screened, 50-minute films. The first, Picasso and Sima, Antibes 1946, depicts the legendary artist's friendship with sculptor and photographer Michel Sima. At Picasso's request, day after day Sima photographed Picasso's works-in-progress in the workshop he found for him at Grimaldi Palace in Antibes---a collaboration that eventually resulted in the creation of the Picasso Museum. This unique showcase in Antibes has recently been renovated and the works of art returned to their proper home, providing visitors the opportunity to step into a moment in art history.

The second film, On the French Riviera with Man Ray and Picasso, offers a memorable portrait of Piccaso's social world, recounting a memorable a summer he spent hosting the great photographer Man Ray and other leading artists at his home on the French Riviera. The film captures the complex swirl of their relationships, the art they made—during a period in which Ray was transitioning to painting—and the looming end of an era of personal and social experimentation, as war rages in Spain and Second World War loomed.
