Linda Duvall, “Getting to Know You Better” The Artist Voice Series

The Women's Art Association of Canada presents The Artist’s Voice 2022 Online Lecture Series

Getting to Know You Better with Linda Duvall

This talk will focus on my approaches to art-making, with a focus on the rural location where I spent the pandemic. In particular, I am interested in coping mechanisms and strategies for when one’s art practice is totally disrupted.

Informed by Duvall’s In the Hole Residency in an earthen hole on Treaty 6 territory in rural Saskatchewan, Canada, she spent 6 hours a day in this hole as a participant where the premise of the residency was that new knowledge comes from the concentrated interaction of people with diverse knowledge bases and perspectives.

“Getting to Know You Better,” is part of what came out of an earthen hole becoming a site for conversation, contemplation, noise or silence and spending extended blocks of time surrounded by earth, sky and one other person.

Linda Duvall is a visual artist based on Treaty 6 territory in Saskatchewan. Her work exists at the intersection of collaboration, performance and conversation. Her hybrid practice addresses recurring themes of connection to place, grief and loss, and the many meanings of exclusion and absence.
