WAAC Luncheon with Bob Douglas, “Various Expressions of White Supremacy: A Historical & Personal Perspective”

Portrait of Bob Douglas

WAAC Luncheons returns in full force with Bob Douglas, Wednesday March 23rd @ 1:00 P.M. online and in-person with his presentation, “Various Expressions of White Supremacy: A Historical and Personal Perspective.”

White Supremacy” and the concept of “Whiteness” has quickly become a central issue to the work of anti-racism and understanding systematic racism. Bob Douglas’s presentation, “Various Expressions of White Supremacy: A Historical and Personal Perspective,” entails how his early education largely ignored the question of race, then followed by a subsequently increasing awareness of white supremacy; from overt racism in the U.S. and Canada to its more subtle forms.

Bob will explore the messages presented in school texts about the concept of race, how government politics and policies are part of systemic racism and how media, using examples of selected films and television, distort, enlighten and diminish African-American contributions to the U.S. and Canada.

Douglas earned his BA & MA from the University of Toronto, taught history and social sciences for the Durham and Peel Boards of Education, Ryerson’s Life Institute, Learning Unlimited & Later Life Learning at Innis College as well as at Branksome Hall, a Toronto independent girl’s school. He is also the author of “The Spirit of Gothic and The Great War,”and The Gothic from  Lenin to Bin Laden,” where he explores history and culture through a Gothic lens.
