The Cool School VOD // Hot Docs at Home
For a decade—1956 to 1966—Los Angeles’ Ferus Gallery was the nexus of a nascent modern art scene, grooming a loose band of idealistic beatniks into competitive, often-brilliant artists. It also helped to solidify the careers of many of New York's shining stars including Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol. Oscar-winning director Morgan Neville (Won’t You Be My Neighbour?, 20 Feet From Stardom) takes you back to this seminal moment in the city’s cultural transformation, exploring the complex web of egos, passions, money and vision that goes into building an art movement from scratch. Featuring narration by actor Jeff Bridges, a breezy jazz score, and interviews with Dennis Hopper, Dean Stockwell and key artists from the era including Ed Ruscha, Frank Gehry and Billy Al Bengston.
