Joyful Noise: The Sacred Choral Works of Antonin Dvořák
Fridays, 10am-12pm
April 21 - May 19
The music of Antonín Dvorák contains some of the most beautiful melodies of all time within works such as the Slavonic Dances, New World Symphony, and Cello Concerto, but the melodies of his vocal, choral, and operatic works are virtually unknown to North American listeners. As a founding composer in the Czech Nationalist movement, Dvorák was instrumental in helping to establish music in the Czech language. As a man of immense faith, Dvorák devoted a fair amount of his vocal and choral music to the praised and glory of God, both in Latin and Czech. Join Dvorák scholar John Holland as you delve into the sacred music of Dvorák, including the Stabat Mater, Requiem, Te Deum, Biblical Songs, and some unknown gems! Journey through Dvorák's life, his travels, his spiritual influences, and his mastery of multiple musical idioms. Discover the sacred music of Antonín Dvorák through recordings, score examples, and live performances in class.
