Pride and Prejudice
It is a truth universally acknowledged that Pride and Prejudice is a timeless classic. While the question of which adaptation of Jane Austen’s most famous work is up for debate, Joe Wright’s 2005 interpretation has bewitched audiences body and soul for the last two decades. Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley) lives with her mother, father and sisters on an estate in the English countryside and she, along with her sisters, faces mounting pressure from her anxious mother to marry. When the outspoken Elizabeth is introduced to the handsome and upper-class Mr. Darcy, there is obvious and immediate chemistry between the two. However, Elizabeth’s prejudice and Darcy’s pride threaten to keep them apart. Wright imbues Austen’s narrative with a sweeping score and an inherent coziness, delivering a beloved comfort film that also satisfies the novelist’s many fans.
