About the talk Health protocols due to COVID-19 have placed significant restrictions on teacher education in the arts in Ontario. Teaching and learning in the arts is primarily experiential, and material practices are essential to the process. The arts, therefore, have unique pedagogical principles that can be difficult to meet during enhanced public health protocols and alternative learning contexts. If the arts either temporarily disappear; are taught in theoretical, non-experiential ways; or become entirely digital; there is likely to be a lasting effect on teacher education in the arts and classroom arts education once the risks of the pandemic have passed. How will the work of teacher educators in the arts change, as they prepare preservice teachers to teach music, visual arts, drama, and dance?
