This life-affirming documentary on the power of dance traces the legacy of one of the most important works of art to come out of the AIDS crisis. Following the death of his life partner and co-creator of 17 years, American choreographer Bill T. Jones crafted a devastating solo debut: the tour-de-force ballet D-Man in the Waters. His passionate choreography gave physical manifestation to the fear, anger, grief and hope for salvation felt by the members of his dance company during the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The film flashes between the present day, where Jones leads a group of college dancers in a masterclass to re-mount the ballet, and New York in the 1970s and 80s, reconstructed through photo collages and bittersweet remembrances. Called “poetry in motion” by IndieWire, Can You Bring It distills the electricity and emotionality of art in a time of plague.
