The Art of Roy Lichtenstein

The Art of Roy Lichtenstein

Guest speaker: art historian Nancy Kotz

Presented by Jewish Art Education (JAE)

Roy Lichtenstein made commercial art into fine art by meticulously painting the dots of the Ben-Day printing process.  Known as the quintessential “POP” Artist of the mid-20th century (along with Andy Warhol), his unique approach to making artwork assured him a legacy in the annals of art history.  Mysteriousness and the use of ambiguity are defining characteristics of the artist and his creative work. This series is based on the exhibition catalog for the Roy Lichtenstein retrospective held at Washington’s National Gallery of Art in 2012. This virtual series will be recorded.

Nancy Kotz began her career in arts and public policy (Congressional Arts Caucus) before transitioning to the museum world (Smithsonian Institution and National Gallery of Art) where she held positions in museum education and museum retail. Nancy is the Founder and Content Curator for VisualArtsDC, a social media-based community with over 1600 followers focused on the visual arts in the metropolitan Washington, DC region. Since 2015, Nancy has been presenting programs in person and virtually to audiences across Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Virginia for Jewish Art Education (JAE). Also serving as JAE Marketing Director, Nancy has expanded JAE’s reach via Zoom to clients throughout the US and Canada. Her clients include senior living communities, houses of worship, community centers, and other organizations which provide programs for lifelong learners. For the Miles Nadal JCC Nancy presented the virtual lecture The Art of Passover last spring, and we are very pleased to welcome her back this winter!

Since 2007, Jewish Art Education (JAE) has been dedicated to increasing the understanding of the contributions of the visual arts to Jewish civilization.  It was founded by Myrna Teck, Ph.D., and much of its program is based on her research and presentations. JAE’s initiatives have focused on expanding the appreciation of Jewish art to a wider audience.  For more information, visit https://www.jarted.org.
