In 1941 Berlin, Hanni Kohn must send her twelve-year-old daughter Lea away to save her from the Nazis. She finds her way to a renowned rabbi, but it’s his daughter, Ettie, who offers hope of salvation when she creates a mystical Jewish creature, an unusual female golem, to protect Lea. These three young women become eternally entwined, their paths fated to cross, their fortunes linked. This magic realism parable takes us on a journey of loss and resistance, courage and love, the mortal and the fantastical.

Denise Drabkin is a retired library manager who thoroughly enjoyed a 40-year career in public libraries. Denise worked in three different library systems on two continents, including the Toronto Public Library, and is a firm believer in libraries as the great levelers on the playing field of life. Denise is a long-time member of the Miles Nadal JCC Book Club, and has given several reviews, including Sleeping with the Enemy: Coco Chanel’s Secret War; A Long Petal of the Sea; The Promise and The Island of Sea Women. We are delighted to welcome Denise as our book reviewer for this season!
