Alliance francaise Toronto: Lecture - Marcel Beneteau

On Wednesday, November 11, 2015, Marcel Bénéteau and the Société d’Histoire de Toronto invite you at the Alliance française for a lecture dedicated to the French-speaking community of America and to its songs.

Marcel Bénéteau received a doctorate in ethnology from Laval University in 2001 and taught in the department of Folklore et ethnologie de l’Amérique française at the University of Sudbury from 2005 to 2015. For over twenty-five years, he has done extensive research on the oral traditions of the Detroit River French community, the oldest continuous European settlement in Ontario. In the course of his fieldwork in this area, he has collected and catalogued over 2,000 versions of traditional French folksongs, a good sampling of which can be heard on his three-volume CD set Vieilles chansons du Détroit. He has performed at various folk festivals and with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra.

The lecture will take place in French.
