The 2017 Bata Shoe Museum Founder's Lecture

The BSM is very excited to welcome as this year’s Founder’s Lecture speaker, Paola Antonelli, Senior Curator at The Museum of Modern Art in the Department of Architecture & Design, as well as MoMA’s founding Director of Research & Development.  Antonelli has curated numerous shows, lectured worldwide, and has served on several international architecture and design juries. She has taught at the University of California, Los Angeles; the Harvard Graduate School of Design; and the MFA programs of the School of Visual Arts in New York. Her Founder’s Lecture talk will be inspired by her upcoming exhibition Items: Is Fashion Modern? which will be on view at MoMA from October 1, 2017–January 28, 2018.

Drawing from the exhibition, Antonelli will consider the ways in which fashion is designed, manufactured, distributed, worn and disposed of today.  Investigating the past and future of 111 items that have a strong impact on history and society in the 20th and 21st centuries, Antonelli examines the many relationships between fashion and functionality, cultural etiquettes, aesthetics, politics, labour, identities, economies and technology.

7pm | $40 per person | $20 for Friends of the BSM | Tickets include a reception with the speaker following the talk | Limited seating | Purchase tickets below or calling 416-979-7799 x 445
