Strange Fruit - A powerful documentary with discussion

Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre

Toronto Jewish Film Society with the United Jewish People’s Order (Toronto) present
Strange Fruit (USA, 2002)
Post screening discussion with music educator Jonnie Bakan and Professor Warren Crichlow

Sunday September 21, 2014, 4:00 pm and 7:30 pm in the Al Green Theatre
Billie Holiday’s heartbreaking 1939 rendition of Strange Fruit became a powerful emblem for African Americans in their long civil rights struggle. What is less known is that the song was written by a Jewish schoolteacher from the Bronx named Abel Meeropol. This documentary paints a powerful portrait of the songwriter and those volatile times, testifying to the unique power of music to unite people and inspire change.
