First Session of the VEMU Estonian Language Book Club

On Wednesday, November 29th at 7pm at Tartu College, the first session of the VEMU Estonian Language Book Club will be taking place. Piret Noorhani will be leading the discussion on two books focused on the topic of childhood memories during the Soviet period: Leikude by Erki Kask and Vee peal (On the Water) by Olavi Ruitlane.

No admission fee. A small donation would be appreciated.

CODENAME SALLY

Celebrate a literary and human rights anniversary: 25 years ago, Salman Rushdie famously emerged from hiding after the pronouncement of a fatwa against his life by the Ayatollah Khomeini, to attend a PEN Canada benefit in Toronto. There, Ontario premier Bob Rae, who will introduce the film, became the first head of government to welcome Rushdie in a public forum anywhere in the world. Co-conspirators Louise Dennys, Ric Young, Adrienne Clarkson, John Ralston Saul, and Marian Botsford Fraser, together with Barbara McDougall, Bob Rae and Rushdie himself, recall the event and the intrigue.

Shoe Origami Workshop a

In celebration of World Origami Day the BSM invites you to try your hand at making an origami shoe! Origami is the art of paper folding and has been long practiced in many cultures. From traditional to modern and simple to complicated, origami has attracted a worldwide following. Come by and join the origami movement at the BSM! Appropriate for all ages and skill levels.

The Bata Shoe Museum's Warm the Sole Sock Drive

The BSM’s annual sock drive returns for another year.  Socks are one of the first items people request when asking for assistance and are a staple of basic care for the homeless. Did you know that socks are the most needed and least donated item of clothing? For the whole month of November, visitors to the BSM are encouraged to bring a new pair of unworn socks for distribution to those in need. If you make a donation on a Saturday or Sunday during the drive, you can visit the BSM for FREE that day.

PIRANDELLO150 Festival

The Pirandello Theatre Society presents PIRANDELLO150 Festival in celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary and of the famed Italian playwright Luigi Pirandello.  Three one act plays will be preformed, THE IMBECILE, THE LICENSE , SICILIAN LIMES under the artistic direction of Frank Spezzano.

"Sharing Our Stories: Born in Canada" Symposium

On Saturday, November 11th at 2pm at Tartu College, the Baltic Canadian Imprints partnership will be hosting a symposium titled Sharing Our Stories: Born in Canada. Members from all four Baltic communities, Baltic German, Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian, will be discussing the challenges and advantages of being first generation Canadian Balts. A panel of first generation representatives from each community will be sharing their experiences with the audience. Special guest Dr.
